Several of those communities are 55+ age-restricted; others have no age restriction but offer similar floor plans and maintenance options. Here is how the main choices compare.
On Top of the World is a large 55+ age-restricted master-planned community on Ocala's southwest side. Its Candler Hills neighborhood includes the semi-private Candler Hills Golf Club, a Gordon G. Lewis design that opened in 2005 with elevation changes that are rare in Florida. Beyond golf, the community offers multiple pools, fitness facilities, a performing arts venue, hobby studios, and a long list of clubs and events. Homes have generally ranged from the $350Ks to roughly $800K.
Stone Creek is a separate Del Webb 55+ community off SR 200. Its Stone Creek Golf Club, designed by Terry Doss, plays to more than 7,200 yards from the back tees and is open to public play. Del Webb communities are built around single-story floor plans and a central clubhouse, so the format will feel familiar to buyers who have toured other Del Webb locations.
Ocala Preserve, near I-75, combines 55+ neighborhoods with non-age-restricted sections in one master plan. Amenities include a Tom Lehman-designed golf course, a large clubhouse with dining and a spa, a resort-style pool, tennis and bocce courts, and more than 10 miles of walking and biking trails.
For buyers who prefer a community without an age restriction, Golden Ocala offers private-club golf on a Ron Garl course along with a spa, fitness center, dining, and an equestrian center beside the World Equestrian Center. The Country Club of Ocala offers a mature private course in southeast Ocala, close to shopping and medical offices.
On the financial side, Florida has no state personal income tax, and primary residents can apply for the homestead exemption, which also limits annual increases in a homesteaded property's assessed value. How those rules apply to your income sources and estate plan is a question for your CPA or tax attorney. For healthcare access, Ocala has two hospital systems for routine and emergency care, and UF Health Shands in Gainesville is roughly 40 minutes north for specialized treatment.
When comparing these communities, look past the course. Confirm the age-restriction rules in the governing documents if applicable. Ask exactly what the HOA fee covers, such as lawn care, exterior maintenance, or gate staffing. Compare club dues and whether golf is included or separate. And walk the floor plans for features that make a home easier to live in for the long term: single-level layouts, wide hallways, walk-in showers, and low-maintenance landscaping.
